STOKED WAVES
My art today, is the convergence of my experiences of living around water from my earliest years through out my adult life. As a boy I was fascinated with the mysteries of the ocean and its existence. I asked myself many questions as I became familiar with this vast puddle.
Why is the power of the wave constant?
How far does a wave travel?
What makes the wave break?
The liquid crystal quality of water, (which resembles that of glass) and the never-ending study of the strange and wonderful world of waves became a life long passion. I have been a waterman, artist, adventure, and lover of nature since I was a young boy. Now as a teacher inspiring others I have began to put my life’s journey to paint and canvas.
The paintings today are an example of the power a wave conjures. They also represent the playful fun humans enjoy with ocean and its life. These works of art demonstrate the peaceful relaxing sense of visiting a strange and wonderful world, yet not below the surface but at its peak.
My techniques are simple and I provide a perfect palette that balances the brightness of the sun with the coolness of water. The medium is acrylic on pulled canvas. Although I have been trained in all areas of art from drawing to sculpture, in this particular body of work I wanted to concentrate in paint. I have used the style of impasto within some pieces. In others I have combined the power of the stroke with the shape of the wave. Over all my technique is used to capture the quality of the surfer word “Stoked”.
